fittingly, the book reads like a play in at least three of the four segments it's such a short, quick read and by the end i could finally appreciate the preceeding sections
'A cup of tea, a sandwich, a little flirtation, and the music of a flute heard in hell, like clear drops of rain falling on a pile of garbage i can see how some people would like this book but it just wan't my cup of tea

As I said, I will be buying more of Mahfouz's works I'm glad I did, but I don't usually read this heavy of literature that takes more thinking and deciphering
, the edition I read was NOT the one I have chosen here on Goodreads, because mine is old and tattered and does not seem to exist in the database , I was more engaged with this book than The Thief and the Dogs or The Day the Leader Was Killed both good books too For one thing, it's much more compact and intense, without the dreaminess I remember from several places in the trilogy
